Description
Through her Partnership for Public Education Fellowship and Grant, Dr. Soslau hired Need in Deed to conduct professional development for four teachers at Warner Elementary School and seven teachers at Shue-Medill Middle School in Critical Service Learning, a teaching strategy that invites students to apply their academic skills to address real-life issues in their communities and schools. Need in Deed is non-profit organization that helps students in grades 3 – 8 increase academic and 21st-century skills through the transformative experience of service-learning that connects the classroom with the community. My Voice, Need in Deed’s framework for service-learning, encourages active, hands-on learning integrated with the school curriculum. My Voice is a structured sequence of classroom activities that extends over the school year, is adaptable for every grade level, is continuously updated, and designed with the flexibility for any subject area. Dr. Soslau then places UD Candidates with the teachers at Warner and Shue-Medill who are doing the Critical Service Learning in their classrooms. These candidates in the Elementary Teacher Education program observe real life Social Justice Pedagogy in action.
